Between the endless emails, social media notifications, and the pressure to be ‘always on’, our digital lives can often contribute more stress than convenience. The fix?

Well, I’ve found that embracing digital minimalism – cutting down on unnecessary digital clutter, being mindful of my online time, and prioritizing quality over quantity in my digital interactions – has brought a sense of peace and focus back into my life.

In this article, I’m going to share with you seven digital minimalism hacks that have personally helped me to feel calmer and less stressed. I hope they can do the same for you.

1) Unplugging regularly

In our digitally-driven world, it’s easy to forget that there was a time when we were not constantly connected. Tech-free time can seem like a luxury, but it’s actually a necessity for our mental health.

The idea is simple: Set aside specific periods in your day or week when you intentionally avoid using technology. It could be as short as an hour in the morning or as long as an entire weekend. The key is consistency.

This practice does two things: First, it gives your mind a break from the constant influx of digital information. Second, it allows you to engage more deeply with the world around you—whether that’s reading a book, going for a walk, or spending quality time with loved ones.

Just like with any new habit, it may feel uncomfortable at first. But over time, you’ll find that these tech-free periods can be an oasis of calm in your busy life.

It’s not just about reducing screen time—it’s about reclaiming your time and attention for the things that truly matter.

2) Designating ‘tech-free zones’

Unplugging is great, but it’s easier said than done. 

One hack that has worked wonders for me is creating designated tech-free zones in my home. I’ve found that setting physical boundaries for technology use can significantly reduce digital distractions and stress.

In my case, I decided to make my bedroom a tech-free zone. That means no smartphones, laptops, or tablets allowed.

A more drastic, yet surprisingly effective, approach to digital minimalism is implementing a digital detox. This involves setting aside a specific period of time, like a day or even a week, where you completely refrain from using digital devices.

During this period, you redirect your focus to offline activities that you enjoy or need to do. It could be anything from reading a book, taking a walk in nature, pursuing a hobby, or spending time with loved ones.

A digital detox gives your mind a much-needed break from the constant flow of digital information. It helps reset your relationship with technology and can make you more mindful of your digital habits moving forward.

It might seem intimidating at first, especially if you’re used to being ‘always on’, but the benefits are worth it. You’ll likely emerge from this digital hiatus feeling refreshed and less stressed.

Plus, you might even rediscover some forgotten joys of living in the non-digital world!

4) Using tech tools to my advantage

So this might sound counterintuitive, but there are actually several digital tools designed to help you manage your digital consumption. Using tech to tame tech, if you will.

For example, most smartphones today come with built-in features that allow you to track how much time you spend on different apps. This can be a real eye-opener for many of us. Once you see how much time you’re spending on certain apps, it’s easier to make conscious decisions about reducing that time.

There are also apps that can help you stay focused by blocking distracting websites or apps during certain hours of the day. I’ve found that using these tools can significantly reduce digital distractions and help me stay focused on more important tasks.

So don’t be afraid to use technology to help manage your digital life. With the right tools, it can be a powerful ally in your journey towards digital minimalism and reduced stress.

5) Prioritizing quality over quantity

In my journey towards digital minimalism, one of the most significant shifts I’ve made is prioritizing quality over quantity in my digital interactions.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of mindless scrolling, absorbing a constant stream of information without really connecting with anything. I’ve been there, and it can leave you feeling drained and disconnected.

7) Making conscious choices

This means being mindful of your digital habits, setting boundaries, and regularly checking in with yourself to see if your digital use is adding value to your life or causing stress.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to digital minimalism. It’s about finding what works best for you. The ultimate goal isn’t to eliminate technology from your life entirely, but to create a healthier relationship with it.
