According to a recent report from the Times of India, a new ATM scam has emerged. The scam is known as the ATM card trap scam. The ATM card trap scam is a devious trick employed by fraudsters to steal your money and personal information. Here’s how it works and how you can stay safe:

How the ATM card trap scam works

  1. Tampered ATM: Scammers physically alter the ATM’s card reader. This could involve attaching a skimming device to steal your card information or entirely removing the reader, causing your card to get stuck.
  2. Feigning helpfulness: When you insert your card inside a ATM machine and it gets stuck, a seemingly helpful stranger might appear, offering to assist.
  3. PIN stealing: They might convince you to re-enter your PIN to “unstick” the card (seeing it in the process) or offer to call the bank for you while you wait.
  4. Taking advantage: Their goal is to distract you and get you to leave the ATM, hoping you’ll forget your trapped card.
  5. Emptying your account: Once you’re gone, the scammer retrieves your card and, with your stolen PIN, withdraws money from your account.

Tips to stay safe from ATM card trap scam

  • Always inspect the ATM for anything unusual around the card slot or suspicious attachments. Look for signs of tampering like loose components or hidden cameras.
  • If your card gets stuck, don’t rely on strangers for help. It’s better to be cautious than risk falling victim to a scam.
  • Never share your PIN with anyone, not even bank officials. They will never ask for your PIN over the phone or in person.
  • If your card gets stuck, directly contact your bank using the customer service number on the back of your card or the bank’s official app.
  • Choose ATMs located in well-lit areas with security cameras, preferably inside a bank branch during operating hours.
  • If you notice a tampered ATM, report it to the bank and the authorities immediately.
