Amid vacancy, senior bureaucrat Tuhin Kanta Pandey was on Saturday designated as the new finance secretary, according to an official order. Pandey is currently the secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved designating Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:87), Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, ministry of finance as Finance Secretary,” the official order said.
Behind sale of Air India and listing of Life Insurance Corporation, Pandey belongs to 1987 batch Odisha cadre. Back in 2019, Pandey replaced Anil Kumar Khacchi.
The vacancy was created following the appointment of T V Somanathan as the Cabinet secretary last month.As per the convention, the senior-most secretary in the Union finance ministry is designated as the finance secretary.
Previously, cabinet appointments committee chose TV Somanathan as India’s new cabinet secretary. A 1987 batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer and current finance secretary, Somanathan will serve a two-year term, initially assuming the role of officer on special duty. He will take over India’s top bureaucratic post on August 30, according to a statement from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, he has held various key positions, including joint secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and joint secretary and additional secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office.
