The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday announced the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a tenure of three years.
Pandey, who currently serves as Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Revenue, will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term concludes on March 1, 2025. Buch, appointed in February 2022, made history as SEBI’s first female chairperson.
The government’s initial notification for the SEBI Chairperson role outlined a maximum tenure of five years or until the age of 65, whichever comes earlier.
Who is Tuhin Kanta Pandey?A 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Odisha cadre, Pandey has held positions at both the state and central levels. Earlier this year in January, the ACC appointed him as Secretary of the Department of Revenue, designating him as Finance Secretary.
Pandey has also served as Secretary in multiple critical departments, including the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM) since October 2019, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) since August 2024, and the Department of Personnel and Training since November 2024. DIPAM and DPE function under the Ministry of Finance.
Before leading DIPAM, Pandey held significant roles in the Union and Odisha state governments. His tenure includes serving as Joint Secretary at the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce.His state-level experience spans various leadership roles in Odisha’s Departments of Health, Finance, Transport, and Commercial Taxes. He has also been the Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
Additionally, Pandey has international experience, having worked at the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
Pandey holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.
