Addressing his last press conference on Tuesday, the outgoing Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) highlighted some of the key aspects that his successor need to take care of.

He said that resorting inflation growth balance is task ahead for RBI. The new governor will take it forward.

“The world order is changing, and it is necessary to remain alert in this situation,” he said.

He further said that the geo economic dynamics is fast changing and it’s important to remain agile. “I’m sure RBI will be ahead of it,” he added.

Beginning his speech, Das said, “I am Not presenting report card or making statements. Just sharing a memories.”

Mentioning his joining date as the Governor, Das said, In December 12, 2018 presser, I said RBI is a great institution and is rich in legacy. I also said I will do everything to uphold professionalism and autonomy of the bank.

Cyber security and threats are big challenges ahead

He highlighted that Cyber security and threats are big challenges ahead, particularly for the central bank. “Our focus in the last 6 years has been to capitalise the benefits of harnessing new tech,” he said.

Das said in the last 6 years, focus has been in harnessing the benefit of new technology. The central bank has also set up RBIIH and sandbox as well as the CBDC is another area where RBI is a pioneer, he mentioned.

Sharing the tools for financial inclusion launched in his tenure, he said we launched many innovative products under UPI which has emerged as a pioneer in the global payments system.

Relationship between finance ministry and RBI at its best

He also talked about the relation between RBI and the Finance Ministry and said the coordination and relationship between the finance ministry and RBI have been at their best.

He further said that sometimes, perception of central bank and the government tends to be different, and it It happens worldwide.

But the Governors of central bank keep in mind the mandate of wider economy, he said.

Earlier in the day, Das shared gratitude messages on social media platform X, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala SItharaman, RBI team and the experts from financial world and the economists.

He also remembered Former Finance Minister, Late Arun Jaitely, in his message.

Das extended congratulatory message for Sanjay Malhotra saying, “All my best wishes to my successor.”

On the question about what mantra he will give to his successor, Das said, ” What I will tell Sanjay should remain between him and I.”
