The Indian government is preparing to expand its flagship health insurance program, Ayushman Bharat, as it marks six years since its launch. A key focus is on revising the package rates for over 1,900 medical procedures covered under the scheme and considering increasing the insurance coverage limit, currently set at Rs 500,000 per family per year.
A 16-member expert committee, led by Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, has been tasked with reviewing these revisions. The committee will also explore extending the coverage beyond the Rs 500,000 limit, particularly for families with elderly members who already receive an additional Rs 500,000. The recommendations will address package cost adjustments, beneficiary identification, and ways to prevent misuse of the scheme. The possibility of linking Ayushman Bharat with digital health initiatives and health centers is also on the agenda.
The scheme
Ayushman Bharat provides healthcare access to 12.5 crore families, primarily targeting the economically vulnerable. The scheme has already facilitated over 7.4 crore treatments, with more than 35.5 crore Ayushman cards issued across India. In response to inflation and increasing demands from state governments and hospitals, the Health Ministry initiated the expert panel to monitor the program’s performance and suggest updates.
Several states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat, have seen the highest hospitalisation rates under the scheme. Currently, 33 states and union territories participate, with Odisha in discussions to join. A significant development is also underway to enhance geriatric care, as the Health Ministry works on expanding care packages for older adults.
In October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to introduce a new tier of Ayushman Bharat, extending coverage to all Indian citizens over the age of 70, further advancing the government’s efforts to provide affordable healthcare and protect citizens from medical bankruptcy.
