Medium has partnered with Speechify to introduce an innovative feature that allows users to listen to articles, according to Speechify. This collaboration aims to enhance content accessibility, providing a new dimension to consuming stories on the platform.
Audio Accessibility for Medium Members
Medium members can now utilize the “Listen” button available at the top of most stories, enabling them to hear articles read aloud by a selection of narrators. This feature is part of Medium’s Listen initiative, designed to make content more accessible and engaging for users who prefer audio consumption. Non-members are encouraged to join Medium to access this feature.
Enhancing Content Consumption
Since its introduction, the audio feature has significantly increased the volume of content consumed by users, reportedly tripling the number of stories they engage with. This capability allows members to listen to articles while performing other tasks, such as commuting or exercising, thus integrating seamlessly into various daily activities.
Improved Retention and Productivity
Users have reported enhanced retention when listening and reading simultaneously, thanks to Speechify’s functionality that highlights text as it reads aloud. This dual-mode of content consumption allows for a more immersive experience, aiding in better comprehension and retention of information.
Speed Listening and Proofreading
The feature also supports speed listening, allowing playback speeds up to 4.5x the standard rate, which many users find beneficial for productivity. Additionally, writers can use the audio playback for proofreading, offering a fresh perspective on their drafts as they listen to their work read aloud.
Accessibility for All
This initiative is particularly beneficial for individuals with dyslexia or visual impairments, as it reduces the barriers to accessing written content. By offering an audio alternative, Medium and Speechify aim to provide a more inclusive reading experience.
Customizing the Listening Experience
Users can customize their listening experience by selecting different voices and adjusting playback speeds. These features are accessible via the web browser for logged-in Medium members, ensuring a personalized and flexible approach to consuming content.
