Robin’s Story
During this journey, I was dreaming, and I thought I had big dreams. And now I’m realizing, I didn’t dream big enough. They say your dreams should scare you. I honestly know what that means now.
I am Robin, better known as Rob the blonde mechanic, I am the owner of Georgia Auto Solutions. I am the first black woman to own an auto repair shop in the state of Georgia.
I think my drive really came from my humble beginnings of growing up in poverty. I’ve applied some of my experiences of growing up on the streets, and that really drove me to become an entreprenuer.
It wasn’t automatic, I want to be a mechanic when I grow up. It really just happened because I kept buying lemons. If I learn enough about cars, I will know enough to where they cannot play me. Then it just turned into a whole, “Wow, I like this.” It’s a passion now.
A lot of the doors were closed in my face. I would get in there because I would put “Rob” instead of Robin and I would see the look on their face like, no.
They always say sales cure everything, right? Solve all the problems. So if I’m number one, they will not talk about my shoes. They are just going to say, “I’m just going to let her do what she do because she’s making the company money.”
In the beginning, I was still poor and was still struggling. So I was living off of my tax return. I would go to local places and they would hit me with so many fees. So when I came across TurboTax, I said, “Okay, well let me give it a try, let’s see.”
I was surprised I can do it myself. It took me like 13 minutes. Like, boom, boom, boom, done. It took a lot of stress off of me so I could focus more on the business. Get it done and over with and I’m on to enjoying my life.
When I grew up, I didn’t have a father and my mom was gone a lot. And so that really impacted me as far as my parenting and trying to be there. It’s not an option of whether I spend time or not with my kids.
I do believe in myself and my ability and I know that this one shop is just the beginning. People think I’m crazy but they thought I was crazy when I was just an 18 year old kid with a GED and a dream.
Looking at myself back then, I would definitley say, “Don’t try to fit in. It’s ok to be yourself. It’s ok to be weird. It’s ok to be nerdy, quirky. It’s ok. And it’s ok to dream.” Everyone is not going to see that vision. Sometimes only god gives you that vision, and it’s for you.
Be yourself. Be original and authentic. Don’t settle and don’t be afraid to dream.
