Ahmedabad: If on Wednesday morning you passed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) building near Income Tax Crossroads, the long queues outside of people waiting to exchange Rs 2,000 notes could well prompt a flashback to demonetization, exactly seven years ago in 2016.
Mahendra Shah, a resident of Sabarmati, found 10 Rs 2,000 notes while cleaning his cupboard locker. “I keep cash at home for emergencies and didn’t realize I had Rs 2,000 notes as well. While cleaning the cupboard, I found these notes and decided to exchange them at the RBI. The rush was just crazy and I didn’t get to the counter. So along with family members who were also in line, I returned home.”
A 21-year-old woman in the queue outside the RBI building on Wednesday told a similar story. “I live in Uttarakhand. I came to visit my parents here in Ahmedabad and learned that they had some Rs 2,000 notes. As the deadline for exchange at banks has lapsed, I am here to get the notes exchanged,” she said, requesting anonymity.
The last day to exchange Rs 2,000 notes at banks was October 7, after which the note ceased to be legal tender. However, individuals and entities can still exchange and deposit Rs 2,000 notes at 19 RBI issue offices. Queues are also seen outside the RBI building late at night. Many people queue up early in the morning.
