CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday announced a Rs 1,000 crore relief package for the districts affected by the recent rain and floods in the state. The relief includes new houses to replace damaged ones, compensation for farmers and the fisherfolk community for damaged crops, dead livestock and fishing boats and loans for traders; micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and self-help groups.

An official release said the government has decided to repair and rebuild houses damaged due to the torrential rain and floods in the Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. The chief minister ordered an assistance of Rs 4 lakh for building new houses and Rs 2 lakh for damaged houses through the rural development and panchayat raj department.

“The department will build 4,577 houses and repair 9,975 houses at a cost of Rs 385 crore with state government funds. Guidelines will be issued shortly,” the release said.

Arrangements have been made to issue new certificates through heads of schools and colleges on submission of application for loss of certificates. New textbooks would be distributed in the respective government and government-aided schools. Books would be provided to students in private schools as per their requirement.

“Collectors will organise special camps on Mondays for those who lost government documents such as certificates/documents, PDS card, driving licence, voter ID and Aadhaar cards,” the release said. The transport department has enabled insurance companies, vehicle manufacturers and agents to speed up services by conducting special camps in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli district.
