Trichy: Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that have been eyeing railways and the defence sector for diversification are optimistic about the interim Union budget tabled in the parliament on Thursday.

As 40,000 normal rail bogies are proposed to be upgraded to Vande Bharat standards, MSMEs here said that efforts should be taken to sanction a section of work orders for the conversion exclusively to the MSME sector through the Golden Rock railway workshop in Trichy.

“Facilities are there in the railway workshop here, we need orders to encourage more MSMEs to make a foray into the production of components for rail bogies. As we have expertise in engineering and fabrication besides welding technologies, upgrading rail bogies will be a boon for MSMEs in Trichy,” N Kanagasabapathy, chairman, of Trichy Trade Centre said.

Trade bodies sought financial assistance to upgrade the machinery of production units here to support them in manufacturing components for rail bogies in Trichy. The entrepreneurs to stay afloat and diversify their focus areas in the defence and railway sectors said that a rehabilitation package from the Union government would help them repay their loans.

The MSMEs said that a common assembly line kind of infrastructure is essential to overhaul bogies in Trichy. Echoing similar views, the Trichy District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA) said that fund allocation for railway infrastructure would pave the way for industrial growth and employment generation.
